The Targeting Autism Project is partnering the Illinois State Library with The Autism Program (TAP) of Illinois to bring together an impressive group of national and regional ASD experts and advocates, who will help stimulate discussions and provide a platform for creating a statewide collaborative action plan to assist libraries in becoming more welcoming to and supportive of the needs of the ASD population.
The Illinois State Library is currently accepting applications to participate in the Targeting Autism Grant project forums. A total of eighty participants will be selected. If you or someone you know is passionate about supporting the Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) population and believes that libraries in collaboration with a wide variety of advocates have the power to improve the quality of lives of individuals and families impacted by ASD, we invite you participate in this very important initiative.

Will you be consulting people on the spectrum as well as experts and advocates? Why not ask the actual population you are trying to serve what it is they are looking for? Also, are you including issues or interests of adults with Asperger’s or Autism?

The large group forum presentations will include one from a young woman who is on the spectrum. She will discuss topics, including misconceptions about people on the spectrum; the need to educate/train people about how they can be helpful; and the kinds of support are needed out in the community and that the covering all ages, not just children. There will also be folks attending who are either on the spectrum or have a lot of experience dealing with family members on the spectrum. Small group discussions will be involved by these folks as well as the other experts and advocates. The project is not limited to, but includes Asperger’s as a part of the autism spectrum.
